Heroism: Two Movies

I watched The Wind That Shakes the Barley this weekend, and The Lives of Others last weekend. One subject that struck me was the way each movie portrays heroism, and I thought I’d talk about that a little.

Darwinism in Practice: The Choking Game

CNN’s Rick Sanchez has a story about the “Choking Game” (Wikipedia article here). While I feel bad for the families of these idiotic kids, in a larger sense, I can’t help but feeling those kids are doing us all a service by removing their genes from the gene-pool.

My only question is- are these kids doing this to get high, or are they just trying out for the Darwin Awards?


The Neocons Continue to Not Get It

Richard Perle was on CNN’s Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer about 10 minutes ago, and demonstrates to me how the neoconservatives continue to be wrong. His stances sound strikingly similar to John Bolton, who’s for some reason been making the rounds on talk TV in recent weeks.

Lord of the Phils

There’s a new show on VH1 called “Acceptable.tv”. It’s basically skit comedy for the ADD crowd. There is a viewer-participation aspect where you get to vote for your favorites. I’m not really sold on that part, but here’s some participation from me, as I share a skit I found particularly funny:

Daniel Dennett lecture at RIT

Tonight (or last night I should say, as it’s now past midnight), I attended the capstone lecture in RIT’s 2006/7 Gannett lecture series, given by Daniel Dennet. I don’t intend this as a full review of the lecture, as I’m not particularly good at that sort of thing, but there were a couple of interesting points that I figured I’d log here before I go to sleep and forget them.
