To loosely paraphrase Tolstoy: Perfect things are all perfect in the same way. Every imperfect thing is impefect in its own way.
I think this maxim is applicable to all categories, not just families, but individuals, and even inanimate objects. At an individual level, I believe we are each defined more by our flaws than by our attributes.
I recently came across this blog post detailing someone’s sarcastic nature, and its rewards and pitfalls: I Bite My Thumb at Thee.
At first, I was going to reply to Scant’s article as a comment, but then I decided it was high time that my nerdy reply to Matt Wilcox about CSS3 from way back in December got usurped from being my most recent post.
So, here is my reply to Scan, and to all others who, like myself, are willing followers of that most cruel god Sarcasm (most-loved sibling to Wit, I must add)…
The Obama campaign has signaled that they’re going to come out on the attack more. I haven’t seen it much yet myself, but I think this can be a good sign or a bad sign. So far, the campaign has proven itself capable of landing only light jabs when it comes to attack ads. Personally, I don’t like when campaigns devolve into negative advertisements, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
However, the campaign feels it’s time to strike back against the ridiculous distortions, outright lies, insults and smears that the McCain campaign has been delivering.
Far be it from me to suggest to the likes of Axlerod and the rest how to do their jobs; but since everyone and their uncle seems to have some advice for the Obama campaign these days, here are my thoughts on how they can go on the attack without becoming the liberal version of Karl Rove…

I promise I will never demand that you signal to me with your eyes that you desperately want to be laid on the table as soon as I give the word. If you choose to signal such to me with your eyes, however, that is acceptable.
I was on my home from snowboarding today (thanks to the timely arrival of a snowstorm in the Cascades) thinking of writing this entry. When I got home and turned my TV on, I found an uncanny coincidence between my planned topic and what was currently playing on the ‘History’ Channel (square quotes meant to indicate that the content of the show was not very historical).
Last night, I dreamt that I was with my family and some strange woman showed up to portend events. We were able to see certain symbols which the woman seemed able to decipher, as well as point us to other signs. Among these, she showed me a mirror in which my nose appeared broken, and then in the next moment, my neck seemed to be as well. In my dream, knowing I was planning on going snowboarding today, I wondered if that was meant to predict some calamitous injury to myself.
