There seemed little question after the argument in an important campaign finance case at the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the makers of a slashing political documentary about Hillary Rodham Clinton were poised to win. The open issue was just how broad that victory would be.
Justices Are Pressed for a Broad Ruling in Campaign Case - NYTimes.com
The idea that corporations or other groups have constitutionally-protected rights by way of their corporate personhood is ludicrous on the face of it. Corporate personhood is a legal fiction that is convenient for business matters (esp. contract law and torts), but ought not be taken too far.
If we discard the notion that corporations have constitutional rights above and beyond the rights of their human constituents, then we can see that Congress should have broad leeway in regulating corporate participation in our political process.

The New York Times has rejected an essay that Sen. John McCain wrote defending his Iraq war policy.
Sen. John McCain wrote an op-ed for The New York Times, but the paper said it could not publish it as written.
The piece was in response to an op-ed from Sen. Barack Obama that was published in the paper last week.

Sniping by Her Aides Hurt Clinton’s Image as Manager - New York Times
Mrs. Clinton’s top advisers said that while her management style might be untidy, it showed her to be comfortable with conflicting ideas among her aides. They said she had pronounced herself “ready to learn” from her mistakes and was resistant to placing too much power in the hands of a single political adviser in the mold of Karl Rove in President Bush’s two campaigns for the White House.
“Ready to learn”? I thought Hillary was “ready to lead on day one”. Perhaps she meant “ready to lead one day”.

The news has been making a small deal about this (hilariously awkward) exchange between a New York Times reporter and John McCain. Some background: Earlier at a town hall event, someone (jokingly?) reminded McCain about a conversation with John Kerry in 2004 in which Kerry offered McCain a VP slot, and asked if McCain would return the favor in 2008. McCain acknowledged Kerry’s offer and insisted he would not consider offering Kerry the nod.
Later, this NY Times reporter is trying to find out if McCain’s acknowledgement of the offer contradicts what he told the NYT at the time, in which he allegedly said he had no such meeting with Kerry.
As entertaining as that is, I didn’t think that was a big enough deal to post by itself, so I decided to add a few more hits from the Straight Talk Express:
